About the work+
Jonas Wood's Untitled (2014) sets a towering snake plant, its blade-like leaves patterned in black, olive and acid green with a single flash of violet, inside a pot that holds a black-and-white photograph of a snow-covered mountain valley. The flat, cut-paper treatment of the plant against the grainy photographic landscape captures the play between pattern and depth at the heart of Wood's celebrated pot series, where each vessel becomes a picture within the picture.
Wood (b. 1977) is among the most prominent painters working in Los Angeles today, known for his richly patterned interiors, still lifes and plant pictures, which he develops through drawings and collages before translating them into paintings and prints. This lithograph and screenprint was printed and published by Cirrus Editions, Los Angeles, the pioneering West Coast print workshop.
