About the Work

Sur la terre des dieux (In the Land of the Gods) is a complete portfolio of 12 original lithographs by Marc Chagall, published between 1967 and 1968. Ten of the twelve works are hand-signed in pencil by the artist. The suite was printed by the renowned Atelier Mourlot in Paris and published by A.C. Mazo in an edition of 75, plus artist proofs.

Executed on Arches wove paper and housed in the original linen-covered portfolio case, the set also includes a title page and poetic texts by Robert Marteau. Inspired by Chagall’s travels to Greece and his fascination with mythology, the imagery blends classical themes with the artist’s signature dreamlike symbolism—mythic creatures, celestial lovers, and radiant pastoral scenes.

This rare and complete set, offered here in excellent condition, exemplifies Chagall’s mastery of color lithography and his lifelong engagement with literature, faith, and folklore. A standout addition to any collection of modern prints or illustrated books.

Marc Chagall

1887-1985

Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Russian-French modernist celebrated for his dreamlike imagery, vivid color, and deeply poetic vision. Working across painting, printmaking, stained glass, and stage design, Chagall drew inspiration from Jewish folklore, biblical narratives, and classical mythology. His style blended elements of Cubism, Fauvism, and Surrealism, yet remained uniquely personal. Born in Belarus, he later became a key figure in the Parisian avant-garde and was among the first artists to explore modernism through printmaking. His lithographs, etchings, and illustrated books—including works for Verve andThe Bible—are considered landmarks in 20th-century graphic art. Chagall’s legacy endures as one of the most beloved and influential artists of the modern era.
