Cy Twombly, Fagus Silvatica, from Natural History Part II: Some Trees of Italy, 1976
Artwork for Sale
Fagus Silvatica, from Natural History Part II: Some Trees of Italy, 1976 is a mixed media print on Fabriano paper from Cy Twombly's celebrated portfolio of botanical studies. This striking work exemplifies Twombly's distinctive approach to mark-making, featuring the Sweet Chestnut rendered through his characteristic expressive drips, frenetic scribbles, and gestural, calligraphic linework.
The print is from "Natural History Part II: Some Trees of Italy," published in an edition of 98. This portfolio represents Twombly's exploration of the beauty and fragility of nature, and the interconnectedness of all living things. The series combines scientific observation with poetic expression, reflecting Twombly's deep engagement with both classical culture and natural forms.
In this work, Twombly employs a combination of lithography, collotype, and collage techniques to create layered compositions that evoke the sensory experience of being surrounded by lush foliage. The use of semi-transparent tracing paper adds depth and dimension to the composition, allowing glimpses of underlying layers to shine through, much like sunlight filtering through the leaves of a dense forest.
