About the Work

Celebrity, Page from Black Book, 1989 is a silkscreen print on smooth wove paper from Christopher Wool's pivotal artist's book "Black Book." This striking text-based work exemplifies Wool's innovative approach to language as visual art, featuring the word "Celebrity" rendered in his distinctive stenciled typography.

The print is from "Black Book," published in an edition of 350. Co-published by Thea Westreich, New York, and Gisela Capitain, Cologne, and produced by Studley Press in Massachusetts, this artist's book has become an important touchstone in Wool's celebrated career. The book features seventeen text-based images, each showcasing a different word that suggests complex character types and psychological states.

Christopher Wool (b. 1955) is widely recognized as one of the most influential American artists of his generation, known for his text-based paintings that combine elements of conceptual art with graffiti-inspired aesthetics. His work has been exhibited in major institutions worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum, New York and The Art Institute of Chicago.
