About the work+
Christopher Wool's a.k.a. (2016) is a suite of eight large-format lithographs printed on Rives BFK paper and published by Universal Limited Art Editions, New York, the workshop behind landmark print projects by Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. On each sheet a tangle of looping black lines, drawn with the speed of graffiti, is overlaid with a string of scrambled typeset characters such as "Gj8u;kN", "eRxqN" and "do0]g", alias-like codes that give the suite its title. The pairing of free gesture with mechanical type runs through Wool's work, from his stencilled word paintings to his later line-based abstractions. Sheets from a.k.a. are held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Wool (b. 1955) came to prominence in New York in the late 1980s with his stencilled word paintings and has since become one of the most influential American painters of his generation, the subject of a major retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2013. Printmaking has remained central to his practice alongside painting and photography.
