About the work+
Shepard Fairey's Time to Move On (2015) is an HPM, or hand-painted multiple, on wood panel, inscribed "AP HPM" as an artist's proof. An oversized wristwatch cuts diagonally across a black and red field, its dial enclosing an oil drop with a drilling derrick inside, a clock running down on fossil fuels beneath the words "Time To Move On". In Fairey's HPMs the printed image is worked over by hand, and here the background is built from layered collage, stencilled patterns and printed ephemera, so no two examples are alike.

Fairey (b. 1970) emerged from the skateboarding and punk scenes with the OBEY Giant sticker campaign he began in 1989, and reached a global audience with his 2008 Hope portrait of Barack Obama. His works on wood panel are made in far smaller numbers than his screenprints on paper, and the crackled finish of the surface gives the image the weight and presence of an object.
