Jonas Wood, Untitled (Red), 2014
Artwork for Sale
Untitled (Red), 2014, is a lithograph and screenprint on Coventry rag paper from an edition of 50. This work features Wood's distinctive graphic style with its characteristic bold colors and flattened perspective, dominated by verdant green tones .
Jonas Wood worked with master printers to achieve his signature layered aesthetic through the combination of lithography and screenprinting techniques. This work is from a series of four prints that exemplify Wood's innovative approach to printmaking, which he has described as directly informing his painting practice. The print was produced in a limited edition of 50, with each print signed, numbered, and dated by the artist on the verso.
Wood has been a dedicated printmaker since 2009, when he first collaborated with Jean Milant at Cirrus Editions. As Wood explained in a 2018 interview with master printer Jacob Samuel for "Nonstop: Jonas Wood Speaks with Jacob Samuel" in Art in Print: "Collaborating with Jean Milant at Cirrus in 2009 was my real first experience making a set of editions with a print house. I had been in a three-person show at his gallery in 2006. I didn't know much about him then, but I went to his gallery and realized that he had made all of this amazing stuff with artists I love, like Ed Ruscha and Baldessari..." Wood further noted the significance of this relationship, agreeing with Samuel's assessment that "Jean Milant is the great unsung hero of Los Angeles printmaking."
The collaboration with Cirrus has been instrumental in Wood's development as a printmaker, with the artist noting, "Once printmaking entered the equation, that also started informing my painting and vice versa. Even when thinking about the process of making a painting, I started taking cues from printmaking and putting them back into paintings."
