About the Work

This vibrant lithograph showcases Joan Miró's masterful exploration of surrealist imagery and political satire. Created in 1971 as part of his celebrated "Ubu aux Baléares" series, this work was printed by the renowned Mourlot studio in Paris and published by the influential art publisher Tériade. "Ubu aux Baléares" draws inspiration from Alfred Jarry's fictional character Ubu Roi, a symbol of grotesque authority and absurdity. Miró reinterpreted this figure through his distinctive visual language, creating a series that combines playful abstraction with pointed commentary on Franco's authoritarian regime in Spain. In this particular plate, Miró's characteristic abstract forms, fluid lines, and bold colors create a dynamic composition that feels both spontaneous and meticulously constructed.

The work exemplifies his ability to blend dreamlike imagery with subtle political critique, reflecting his ongoing engagement with surrealism and avant-garde artistic movements of the 20th century. This piece is especially rare as a "hors commerce" (HC) example from an edition of just 6 such proofs. HC prints are traditionally reserved for the artist, publisher, and collaborators, making them particularly sought after by collectors. Joan Miró (1893-1983) is recognized as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, known for his contributions to surrealism and abstract expressionism. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern, and the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona.
