About the work+
Cy Twombly’s work has long been associated with the intersection of mark-making, myth, memory, and poetic gesture. Untitled (Detail of Painting), included in the Re-Object/Mythos exhibition, draws upon Twombly’s lifelong engagement with classical antiquity and the layered processes of writing, erasing, and rewriting history.

Twombly spent most of his adult life in Italy, where daily encounters with ancient ruins, classical literature, and Mediterranean landscapes infused his work with a sense of mythic time. By the early 2000s, when Re-Object/Mythos was organized, Twombly had solidified a reputation as one of the great modern interpreters of classical mythology—not through literal depiction, but through an expressive vocabulary of scribbles, gestures, fragments, and atmospheric color.

The exhibition itself explored themes of objecthood, history, and cultural memory, bringing together artists whose works blur the boundaries between painting, text, and artifact. Twombly’s contribution, with its characteristic loops, smudges, and traces of language, exemplifies his ability to transform the surface of a painting into a kind of archaeological site. Each gesture feels like an unearthed remnant, a clue pointing toward ancient narratives without fully revealing them.
