The pairing of free gesture with mechanical type runs through Wool's work, from his stencilled word paintings to his later line-based abstractions. Sheets from \u003cem\u003ea.k.a.\u003c\/em\u003e are held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWool (b. 1955) came to prominence in New York in the late 1980s with his stencilled word paintings and has since become one of the most influential American painters of his generation, the subject of a major retrospective at the Solomon R.
