Shepard Fairey

b. 1970, Charleston, South Carolina · Lives and works in Los Angeles, California · 8 works available

Biography

Shepard Fairey came out of the Providence skate and punk scene in the late eighties, wheat-pasting his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” stickers on every vertical surface he could reach. That campaign became OBEY, and his graphic language — bold, high-contrast, lifted equally from Soviet propaganda and skateboard graphics — became one of the most recognized visual idioms of the past thirty years. The 2008 Obama HOPE poster cemented his crossover, but the edition work has always been the backbone of the practice. He prints through his own studio in Los Angeles.
