Biography

RETNA built a personal script — part Arabic calligraphy, part Blackletter, part Egyptian hieroglyph — and scaled it to the sides of buildings across Los Angeles before the gallery world came calling. Born Marquis Lewis, he came up painting freight trains and walls in the mid-nineties. The line work is immediately identifiable and translates well to editions and works on paper.
